There is a lesser-known but also dangerous syndrome closely associated with depression, which is self-harm syndrome. We are less aware of this syndrome, because it is only discovered when the consequences to the patient become too obvious and dangerous.
However, self-destructive behaviors - mostly by young people - are often disregarded or misunderstood in families and communities. This behavior is complicated, unpredictable, and sometimes imitated.
An afflicted person can hurt his body but can not overcome his own illness unless his family, friends, and community are there to help, listen, and understand.
