The event was hosted by the Asia Society in New York on September 28th to mark 20 years of Vietnam - US relations. Nearly 100 US government officials, ACADEMICS and business people gathered at the event.
On behalf of the Asia Society, Former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd thanked Vietnamese State President Truong Tan Sang for participating in the event.
He highly appreciated Vietnam’s achievements in economic development and Vietnam’s efforts in poverty reduction to meet the UN’s Millennium Development Goal.
Speaking at the event, State President Truong Tan said that the Asia - Pacific region would continue to be a dynamic region and work towards co-operation with other countries in the region. However, the region is also facing obstacles such as terrorism, threats to cyber security, aviation and maritime security, climate change, and migration issues.
President Truong Tan Sang said Vietnam and the US share many common interests that have become the driving force to overcome the legacy of war and political differences. Sang said the two sides need to work closely to maintain peace, stability, co-operation and development in Asia - Pacific.
After the speech, State President Truong Tan Sang answered questions about the prospects for Vietnam's development, opportunities posed by the possible Trans-Pacific Partnership and the country’s solutions to improve human rights and climate change.
