The ceremony saw the presence of Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Uong Chu Luu, Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung and leaders of provinces of Gia Lai, Kon Tum, Dak Lak, Dak Nong, and others.
Pleiku Town was established in 1929 and then upgraded to a third-class city under Gia Lai Province in 1999. Ten years later, the city was recognised as a second-class city in 2009 thanks to improvements in its infrastructure and transport systems in addition to trade and service development.
Pleiku completed the task of building new-style rural areas in 2018 and recorded a 13% growth in production value in 2019.
Addressing the ceremony, Deputy PM Trinh Dinh Dung congratulated Pleiku for being recognised as a first-class city, noting that the recognition demonstrates the efforts and achievements of the city over the years.
The upgrade of the city will bring about many benefits to its local people, helping the city create new motivation and opportunities for development while promoting the investment of economic sectors in the city, said the Deputy PM.
He added that as a political, economic and social centre of Gia Lai Province, Pleiku City should take the lead in applying science and technology in all areas including human resources training and administrative reforms towards building a modern, smart and environmentally friendly city.
*Earlier on the same day, Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Uong Chu Luu visited and presented gifts to 100 disadvantaged primary pupils in Pleiku City.
