In recent years, coastal erosion has become more serious. According to national statistics, Vietnam loses 300 to 500 hectares of land in 28 coastal provinces each year. The Mekong Delta is the most vulnerable region with 52 coastal landslides of nearly 270km on the eastern and western coastal areas. The rise of sea levels and narrowing mangrove forests were pointed out as the main reasons for this.
Narrowing green belts have affected the local people's livelihoods. To solve this problem, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Department has urged the local authorities and the residents of coastal provinces to plant trees and restore natural green belts. This is a sustainable and inexpensive way of adapting to climate change.
