VTV.vn - Claycourt master Rafa Nadal passed his first real test of this year’s French Open with a 7-6(4) 6-4 6-1 victory against Italian rising star Jannik Sinner as his quest for a record-breaking 13th title gathered momentum on Tuesday (Oct 6).

* Free agent Mario Goetze, who scored the winning goal in the 2014 World Cup final for Germany, has signed for PSV Eindhoven on a two-year contract, the Dutch club said on Tuesday. The attacking midfielder, who has made 63 international appearances, was released by Borussia Dortmund in June after battling with form and injury.

* France defender Leo Dubois has been sent home from the squad to isolate after testing positive for COVID-19 and will miss their upcoming internationals, the French federation said on Tuesday. The Olympique Lyonnais right back, 26, will miss Wednesday's friendly with Ukraine at Stade de France and the Nations League games at home to Portugal on Sunday and in Croatia on Oct. 14.

* Polish teenager Iga Swiatek recovered from a nervy start to outclass Italian qualifier Martina Trevisan 6-3 6-1 and move into the French Open semi-finals on Tuesday. The 19-year-old, who thrashed Romania's top seed Simona Halep on Sunday to reach her first Grand Slam quarter-final, looked tight as she trailed 3-1 after a long wait to get on court but then took charge with some aggressive hitting.

* Serie A has postponed to Oct 13 a meeting to evaluate bids by private equity funds for a stake in its media business, Italy's top flight soccer league said on Tuesday. Serie A top representatives were due to meet on Oct. 9 to discuss offers by two private equity consortia led by CVC and Bain vying for a stake in a newly creating company managing the league's broadcasting rights.

* Nottingham Forest appointed former Brighton & Hove Albion boss Chris Hughton as manager on Tuesday, shortly after dismissing Sabri Lamouchi following a losing start to the new season. Hughton, 61, returns to management for the first time since leaving Brighton in May 2019.

* Argentina's Diego Schwartzman outlasted Dominic Thiem in a brutal claycourt war of attrition to prevail 7-6(1) 5-7 6-7(6) 7-6(5) 6-2 and reach his first Grand Slam semi-final at the French Open on Tuesday. Schwartzman had never beaten a top-five player at a Grand Slam and had lost his three previous quarter-finals, including one at the French, but the 28-year-old was relentless in his pursuit of victory in a gripping duel.

* Les Reed will step down as the Football Association's technical director at the end of the year and will be replaced by his assistant John McDermott, English football's governing body said on Tuesday. In his two-year spell with the FA, Reed worked with England's senior, under-21 and development teams and developed a pathway for emerging talents coming through the national football centre at St. George's Park.

* German clubs and the national team will need to learn to rotate if the players are to remain fit and healthy in an unusually busy season and perform at a top level in next year's European Championship, Germany coach Joachim Loew said on Tuesday. * France coach Didier Deschamps has praised Olivier Giroud's mental toughness and high standards of professionalism as he confirmed the striker will start in Wednesday's friendly against Ukraine to claim his 100th cap for the national team. * Argentine Nadia Podoroska became the first qualifier to reach the French Open semi-finals in the women's singles draw when she downed Ukrainian third seed Elina Svitolina 6-2 6-4 on Tuesday. The world number 131, on her second appearance in the main draw of a Grand Slam, emulates Belgium's Filip Dewulf, the only qualifier in either of the singles draws since tennis turned professional in 1968 to make it to the last four at Roland Garros, in 1997.

* Serie A President Paolo Dal Pino has tested positive for COVID-19, Italy's top flight soccer league said in a statement on Tuesday. A former telecoms executive, Dal Pino was appointed at the helm of Serie A in January, shortly before the COVID-19 outbreak brought the championship to a three-month standstill.

* As the transfer window slammed shut on Monday, two former England internationals were left stuck outside in the cold. Ex-Manchester United and Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck and former Gunner Jack Wilshere ended the trading period without clubs after their contracts were terminated.

* Unseeded Danielle Collins battled past Tunisian Ons Jabeur 6-4 4-6 6-4 on Tuesday to reach the French Open quarter-finals for the first time in her career. World number 57 Collins raised her level after the opening nine games of the first set went with serve, when the American broke to edge ahead in the contest as Jabeur made an unforced error from the back of the court.

* Ineos-Grenadiers team leader Geraint Thomas is pulling out of cycling’s Giro d’Italia after a crash on the third stage, Italy's Gazzetta Dello Sport reported on Tuesday. The Welshman's Giro challenge effectively came to an end before the first climb on Monday, after he was dropped following an early crash.

* Switzerland winger Xherdan Shaqiri has tested positive for COVID-19, the country's football federation said on Tuesday, one day after the 28-year-old rejoined the national team for the first time in over a year. The Liverpool player, who last appeared for Switzerland in the Nations League finals in June last year, had arrived at the team hotel on Monday afternoon ahead of a friendly at home to Croatia on Wednesday.
