This will be the third movie directed by Woody Allen that is selected to open the Cannes Film Festival after Hollywood Ending (2002) and Midnight in Paris (2011), which earns him to be the director with most opening movies at Cannes Film Festival.
Café Society stars Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network, Now You See Me), Kristen Stewart and Steve Carell revolving around the life of a young, ambitious man who is lured by the Hollywood society. However, Café Society is not among the nomination this year.
Up to now, 2 movies have confirmed to compete at the festival. They are Money Monster – a horror movie directed by Jodie Foster, starring Julia Robert and George Clooney – and The BFG, directed by Steven Spielberg.
The official categories as well as nominees will be announced at mid April. The 69th Cannes Film Festival is scheduled to be held from 11th through 22nd of May in France. George Miller, the director of the successful Mad Max: Fury Road will serve as the President of the Jury for the main competition.
