Vietnam to improve paediatric emergency care

VTV.vn - Vietnam’s child mortality rate is still high, 19.7 per thousand. One of the reasons is the shortage of localised emergency paediatric care.

In order to improve the treatment, the Central Children's Hospital has worked with the Advanced Life Support Group from the United Kingdom to organise training courses on the subject.

A three year-old child has had an accident while playing. The doctor has diagnosed a traumatic brain injury. Timely treatment based on the correct procedures is vital in such cases. This one case study doctors have experienced when participating in the training session.

"When participating in this training course, I recognise some mistakes I’ve made before. This course provides international standard procedures and knowledge." - Dr. Hoang Kim Lan, Infectious Diseases Departmen, Vietnam National Hospital of Pediatrics

The Advanced Paediatric Life support training was developed in the UK 30 years ago. Although this course only lasts for 3 days in Hanoi, Vietnamese doctors have benefited from new techniques and knowledge related to paediatric emergency care.

"According to a recent study by the Vietnam National Hospital of Pediatrics, 0.3% of child deaths are related to the handling of emergencies, while 70% of ambulance crew are not capable of addressing cardiac or respiratory arrests in transit." - Suse Wieteska, Director, Advanced Pediatric Emergency Training Centre, United Kingdom

"This training course should be implemented in provinces and cities across the countryIt will help to improve the knowledge and skills of medical staff in paediatric emergency care" - Le Thanh Hai, Director, Vietnam National Hospital of Pediatrics.

Medical universities in Vietnam have not provided specialised education related to paediatric emergency care and paediatric emergency training courses have not received much attention in hospitals. Therefore, medical staff need to be trained through advanced paediatric emergency courses to improve their skills.
