Mixed cropping adds value to aquaculture

VTV.vn - In many places, improving livelihoods with new policies is still very difficult. However, in the central province of Thua Thien Hue, new models in aquaculture production have proven effective.

Commune No. 14 has significantly improved over 30 years, thanks to mixed cropping in aqua-culture production. Fish like seabass, discus and red tilapia have high value and are raised after each shrimp season.

"Previously, farming was based on mixed cropping, which means we had to raise many kinds of fish and shrimp at the same time. If we only do monocropping, we face a high risk of losses", Pham Hoa - Commune No.14, Quang Cong Ward, Quang Dien Dist., Thua Thien Hue Province - said.

The commune has fostered the use of technology in aquaculture production, and people have become more responsive to changes in the market. The mixed cropping model has brought high value. With each hectare, a household can earn about 3,000 USD per year.

"These models have proven effective recently, and we will continue using them", Le Duan - Chairman of Quang Cong Ward People’s Committe - said.

With per capita income from 1,100 to 1,400 USD, mixed cropping in aquaproduction has helped reduce the number of poor households in the commune, increasing the quality of life in the locality.
