Hoang Thi Phuong was born with a congenital absence of kneecaps, which prevented her legs from bending normally. Throughout her childhood, she underwent numerous surgeries to help her stand on her legs. But even at the age of three, Phuong couldn’t walk independently and had to use her hands instead of her feet get around. It wasn’t until she turned four that she could take her first steps, albeit with great difficulty. Due to her physical condition, Phuong retreated from social interactions and was often teased by her peers.
After completing ninth grade, Phuong decided not to pursue high school and instead enrolled in a vocational school for disabled youth, despite the objections of her parents, teachers, and friends. This decision opened a new chapter in her life. Studying in an environment with peers who had various disabilities, Phuong gained a deeper understanding of her challenges and developed empathy for those less fortunate. This experience sparked in her a desire to help others in similar situations. After two months at the vocational school, Phuong was inspired to return and complete her high school education. In 2020, she successfully passed the university entrance exam and was admitted to the Special Education program at Hanoi Metropolitan University.
One might think that her physical limitations would hinder her university career, but Phuong thrived and enjoyed a vibrant student life like any other. She used her challenges as motivation to help others facing difficulties. From her freshman year, Phuong volunteered for programs such as providing support to children in remote areas and participating in blood donation drives. Gradually, she gained the trust of those around her and became the Vice President of the Hanoi Disabled Students Club. In 2023, Phuong was a delegate to the "Vietnamese Youth Resilience" program, representing a generation of Vietnamese youth with disabilities who have overcome adversity.
In addition to her academic and community activities, Phuong also prioritizes her health. She is passionate about sports, as it not only strengthens her physically but also helps her manage her emotions and maintain mental well-being. Seeing the positive impact of sports, Phuong joined a sports club for people with disabilities and achieved notable accomplishments. She is currently honored to be part of the first group of certified national referees for disabled sports in Vietnam.
On her journey to spread love, Phuong has always been supported by dear friends and teammates. She expresses deep gratitude to those who have been with her from her first tentative steps to the meaningful journey she continues today. For Phuong, the love and support from others, combined with her passion for sports, have transformed her life completely.
