To celebrate the traditional Khmer New Year, also known as Chôl Chnăm Thmây, the Vietnam Television Center for the Southern Region is organizing the 2026 Mekong Delta Khmer Farmers Football Tournament - Binh Dien Cup. The tournament will take place from April 10 to 14, 2026, at Bet Ton Pagoda Stadium, My Huong Commune, Can Tho City.
The largest tournament of its kind to date, it brings together 32 Khmer farmer teams, equivalent to around 800 players, from four localities with significant Khmer populations: Can Tho, Ca Mau, Vinh Long, and An Giang. Beyond being a sporting event, it carries profound cultural and social significance, contributing to the preservation and promotion of the Khmer ethnic identity in contemporary life.
The tournament’s knockout format creates high levels of competitiveness and excitement from the very first rounds. Each match consists of two 25-minute halves, which are well-suited to amateur athletes while maintaining a fast-paced, engaging rhythm for spectators.
Matches will be played on rural pitches instead of professional stadiums, reflecting the simplicity and deep connection to agricultural life in the Mekong Delta.
The tournament not only celebrates grassroots sports but also highlights the image of modern, dynamic Khmer farmers who are increasingly integrating into the country’s broader development.
The competition offers attractive rewards: the champion will receive VND 60 million, a trophy, medals, and a title board; the runner-up will receive VND 40 million; and the third-place team will receive VND 20 million, along with various individual and team honors. These rewards serve as strong motivation for teams to compete and perform at their best.
More than just a sports event, the 2026 Mekong Delta Khmer Farmers Football Tournament - Binh Dien Cup serves as a cultural bridge, fostering solidarity and national pride. Through this event, VTV10 continues to affirm its pioneering role in creating media content that is closely connected to community life.
Thanks to its well-structured organization and meaningful social impact, the tournament promises to deliver some exciting and emotional matches. It becomes a highlight of the 2026 Chôl Chnăm Thmây festival for the Khmer community in the Mekong Delta.
The opening and final matches will be broadcast live on VTV10 and VTV5, and simultaneously streamed across VTV’s digital platforms and social media channels.
