The statement was made during a visit by the Lao delegation to the B&T wind farm in Quang Binh Province on August 21, as part of a working exchange programme between the two countries’ legislative bodies.
B&T is one of the largest wind farms in Vietnam, featuring 60 turbines with a combined capacity of 252 megawatts. The 8.2 trillion VND (350 million USD) project began generating electricity in November last year.
The wind farm is designed to produce 648 million kWh of clean electricity each year, helping to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 581,000 tonnes and contributing 100 billion VND (4.3 million USD) to the provincial budget annually.
According to Quang Binh leaders, several Vietnamese enterprises are looking to invest in wind power projects in the Lao provinces of Savannakhet and Khammouane to generate and transmit electricity back to Vietnam.
This is a new approach in which Quang Binh hopes to receive the support of both countries’ Governments and National Assemblies so that a survey of wind power potential in central Laos can be carried out in the coming time.
Lao National Assembly Secretary General Pingkham Lasasimma promised to create favourable conditions for cooperation between Quang Binh and central Lao provinces, as well as between the two countries in general, in wind power development and other fields.
