With the theme “Start for the Future,” January's Kind Deeds highlights selfless giving by young people across Vietnam. They include two friends who journeyed through all 63 provinces to “green” their homeland, an 18-year-old girl who spreads joy through free English classes, and a man who provides livelihood opportunities for people with disabilities.
Han and Hy: A Journey Across 63 Provinces to Plant Trees
Two young men, with two shovels in hand, traveled across 63 provinces and planted over 500 trees along their 8,000 km journey. These numbers reflect the impressive efforts of Han Vietnam and Hy Du Ky (Dang Duc Tuan and Vo Minh Tan), founders of the “A Little Vietnam” project, with the message, “A Little for Vietnam”. They believe that if everyone does a little bit, we can do a lot. In addition to planting trees, they have organized meaningful reforestation trips and workshops for environmental enthusiasts.
Their journey was not without its challenges. “Not every place welcomes us to plant trees”, they said. In places like Kon Tum, the locals cherish their lush forests and are eager to support them. However, in other areas, they had to persuade or even beg for permission to plant trees.
Han and Hy in the Kind Deeds in January program were joined by two university students, Van Anh and Tra My, who were inspired by “A Little Vietnam” to launch “A Little Vietnam Plus”. In one month, their project planted 300 cho and tau trees, and funded 85 additional trees, which will absorb an estimated 60 tons of CO2 annually.
An 18-Year-Old Girl Inspires Through the “Your Lover” Project.
Nguyen Nam Bao Ngoc, a petite yet driven girl from Ca Mau, excels academically and is passionate about volunteer work. She overcame her struggles with English and now inspires others to learn it. At just 16, she founded the Your Lover—A Place to Build Your English Foundation project, which offers free online English classes and attracts hundreds of students from Vietnam, Japan, South Korea, and beyond.
“My dream is to build schools for underprivileged children”, Bao Ngoc said. “Although I was worried about being judged at first, I reminded myself that I am just a young university student stepping out of my comfort zone to pursue my dream. What I have done and continue to do helps ease the hardships of others, and that makes me happy”.
During the program, Bao Ngoc appeared as a speaker, introducing herself and participating in a bilingual Q&A challenge called “Miss Kind Deeds”, judged by hosts Thuy Van and Manh Cuong. Her outstanding performance earned her high praise from the judges.
A Teacher’s Nearly 10-Year Journey of Teaching Sewing to Empower Women in Need.
Anh Long, once a math enthusiast who dreamed of studying automotive engineering, changed his career path upon entering university. Starting with free online sewing tutorials, he now uses his home as a sewing school for special learners.
His motivation came from personal experience. Despite graduating with honors, he faced the challenges of raising a daughter with cerebral palsy. Observing the difficulties women in need face in finding work, Anh Long dedicated himself to teaching sewing. For nearly a decade, the thirty-eight years old has helped many women find jobs and regain their self-confidence.
One of his students, Vu Thi Lan, appeared alongside him on the program. With his support, she opened her small tailoring shop and took control of her life. The program also featured a “fashion show” where two child models wore outfits handmade by Lan, symbolizing hope and resilience.
Carefully crafted stitches not only create beautiful garments but also bring smiles and hope to fragile lives, helping them find a brighter path for tomorrow.
If Han and Hy began their journey with the green seedlings they nurtured along every path they traveled, and Bao Ngoc equips young people with the knowledge to confidently step into the future, the lively chatter and the peaceful clink of sewing machines are ever-present in Duy Long's classroom.. These young people, each with their own unique missions, will continue their journey of kind deeds, spreading positive energy to brighten this world.
