Japan's House of Representatives on Wednesday approved a draft second extra budget for fiscal 2020, totaling 31.91 trillion yen ($296 billion), to provide additional funding to front-line medical workers and support people reeling from the COVID-19.

With the supplementary budget, approved by the Cabinet on May 27, the government plans to roll out a new package of programs focusing on support for small firms struggling since stay-at-home requests were imposed in April and medical staff at the forefront of the battle against the virus.

The second extra budget for the fiscal year, which started April 1, is expected to be approved by the lower house on Wednesday and enacted Friday after its passage in the House of Councillors, since the ruling and opposition parties agreed on the schedule of parliament deliberations.
