“I love this little town. It’s lovely and peaceful. The residents are warm and friendly. So I decided to spend the rest of my life in Hoi An and do something for it”. The Japanese woman regards Hoi An as her second home.
Reiko visited central Vietnam many times as she was the Secretary General of the Kawasaki City’s Japan-Vietnam Friendship Association. She now dedicates her time and enthusiasm to humanitarian projects.
Her project – U Café not only serves as a favourite spot to many tourists but also creates job opportunities for underprivileged people. The staff also have the chance to learn other skills and knowledge.
U Café utilises bio-friendly waste-water treatment plant. Reiko stated that if widely used, this treatment will help curb the pollution in the Hoài River.
Despite being in her late sixties Reiko remains devoted to social work. Another of her projects is to exhibit and sell brocade products made by locals to Japan, with the proceeds going to nurturing and caring for orphans at a local pagoda. She is keen to continue her involvement in social activities.
