40 years after establishing economic relations, Japan is one of Vietnam's top economic partners. Japan was the second biggest foreign investor in Vietnam after South Korea last year. According to Japan External Trade Organisation there are currently more than 2,000 Japanese enterprises in Vietnam, many of which have been here for nearly 30 years.
There are currently some 35 Vietnamese investment projects in Japan with a total capital of around 7 million USD.
Regarding trade, turnover grew by 14% annually per year over the past decade. In 2006, the figure stood at nearly 10 billion USD and reached some 30 billion USD last year. Japan was Vietnam's second largest importer after the US in 2016. The two countries are estimated to have a total trade turnover of 60 billion USD in 2020.
