International co-operation supports heritage preservation in Quang Nam

VTV.vn - The central province of Quảng Nam has been one of the few localities in Vietnam to successfully call for international sponsorship in the preservation of its heritage and historical sites

Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1999, Mỹ Sơn Sanctuary and Hội An Old Town have long become well-known tourist attractions. These two sites have also been well-preserved and utilised thanks to support from international organisations.

Nguyen Chi Trung, Director, Hoi An Centre for Cultural Heritage Management & Preservation, Quang Nam Province said: In addition to financial support, the most important thing is the expertise local authorities learn from foreign experts and local residents are also more responsible in the preservation efforts.

This is one of dozens of downgraded old houses in Hoi An which are currently benefiting from restoration funded by international organisations. Each household are granted 45 to 70% of the restoration costs. Through this the staff of Hoi An Centre for Cultural Heritage Management & Preservation gain huge amounts of experience from UNESCO and JICA experts.

Nguyen Thanh Danh, Technician, Hoi An Centre for Cultural Heritage Management & Preservation, Quang Nam Province said: We have the chance to work with Japanese experts, who are quite proficient in assessing wood quality and working on wood joints.

Quang Nam Province intends to start 16 preservation projects with estimated expenditure of 22 million USD over the next 5 years,. This will also pose huge demand on budgets, technology and human resources and international organisations will continue to play an important role in the province’s preservation work.
