Recently, a workshop on the circular guiding development and adjustment of marine integrated coastal resources management was held in Hanoi to discuss ways of effectively managing and utilising natural coastal resources.
Vietnamese coastal and marine areas have abundant natural resources, which are shared and exploited by many economic sectors such as oil and gas, seaports, aqua-culture, and tourism. However, the paradox in the exploitation of these resources lies in the fact that most sectors only focus on their own benefits, without taking into consideration the environmental costs. For this reason, having a proper management plan for the country's coastal areas is essential.
Vietnam is in need of a coordination mechanism for exploring natural coastal resources among localities and sectors. This is why the integrated management of coastal areas is the solution proposed by both Vietnamese and international experts at the workshop on the circular guiding development and adjustment of marine integrated coastal resources management. This method has brought about a mechanism to resolve the paradox among sectors in exploiting natural marine resources. This method has received support from many international organizations in Vietnam.
Sustainable exploitation and development is one of the key tasks of local governments. The development of guidelines, the issuance of legal documents and the implementation of the integrated management of coastal areas are necessary to help avoid conflict in utilising resources and conserving coastal areas in Vietnam.
