Sweden, who have already returned home from the World Cup after being eliminated, were fined for the same offense prior to their quarter-final defeat to England.
The World Chess Federation said on Friday its ethics commission had suspended long-time president, Russian businessman Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, for having allegedly violated the organization’s code of ethics. The commission says it found that he had “acted in a manner incompatible with his duty to put the interests of FIDE above his own personal interests,” among other alleged violations.
Liverpool have signed Switzerland international Xherdan Shaqiri from Stoke City, the English Premier League giants announced on Friday (July 13). The Reds said he had signed “a long-term contract”, with British media reports saying Shaqiri had arrived at Anfield in a five-year deal for £13 million (US$17 million, €15 million).
Colombian doubles specialist Robert Farah has been suspended for three months and fined US$5,000 after being found guilty of breaching the Tennis Anti-Corruption Program. A statement from the Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU) said Farah, who reached the final of this year's Australian Open with Juan Sebastian Cabal, had facilitated betting by promoting a gambling website in a Twitter post.
Dutchman Dylan Groenewegen outblasted his rivals to the line in a sprint to take the sixth stage of the Tour de France on Friday, the longest single stage of the race, a 231-km haul from Fougeres to Chartres. Groenewegen, who won the final stage on the Champs Elysees last year, crushed the pedals with 200 metres to go to easily beat Colombian Fernando Gaviria.
American Christian Coleman returned from injury to run his fastest 100 meters of the season and claim victory ahead of an impressive field in a time of 9.98 seconds at the Diamond League meeting in Rabat on Friday. Coleman edged compatriots Ronnie Baker (9.98) and Noah Lyles (9.99) in a photo-finish as he competed for the first time since late May having struggled with a hamstring injury.
