Despite the efforts of local government most of the town’s old buildings are dilapidating at an alarming rate due to limited funds.
According to reports of Hoi An Monument Centre, there are currently more than 1,000 old houses and other historical buildings that are suffering from serious deterioration.
Most are classified in Strict Conservation category and are made from wood, making them particularly susceptible to risk of collapse after hundred years of existence.
After spending years on restoration and repair through tourism revenue and international sponsorship, Hoi An still lacks funds to match the growing number of buildings that facing problems.
The city, therefore, is seeking funds from local people and government for conservation of the old town’s architectural treasures.
