The information was revealed at an event on October 27 to mark the 30th anniversary of Hepza.
With the Government’s determination and Ho Chi Minh City’s efforts, the first export-processing zone of Vietnam, known as Tan Thuan, was formally established on November 25, 1991.
Today, the city has three export processing zones and 14 industrial parks, which generate annual export revenue of 7 billion USD, accounting for 15% of the city’s total export revenue.
Such zones also contribute 22 trillion VND (886 million USD) to the government budget each year and create 281,000 jobs.
From the success of Tan Thuan, export-processing zones and economic zones have been established in Ho Chi Minh City and almost all provinces and cities throughout the country.
Speaking at the anniversary ceremony, Ho Chi Minh City Party Secretary Nguyen Van Nen spoke highly of the efforts of Hepza officials, as well as the contributions of experts, workers and the people who gave away their land for the construction of such zones.
He took the occasion to call for breakthrough measures to develop export-processing and economic zones in a new period on the foundation of science-technology, innovation, reducing labour-intensive sectors and restructuring in the ecological and circular direction.
The city’s Party chief also noted that the construction and development of such zones must always go hand in hand with addressing social security issues, such as building social houses and kindergartens for workers.
