Genetically modified corn causes concern

VTV.vn - A rumour has been circulating that most of the sweet corn currently available in the Vietnamese market is actually genetically modified (GM) corn, which allegedly causes cancer.

This is a blow to the sweet corn industry As a result, sweet corn prices have dropped by 35% In response, the Ministry of Agricultural and Rural Development has clarified that Vietnam is currently not producing any modified sweet corn

According to authorities, the Vietnamese corn industry is currently farming 50 different corn species, 16 of which are genetically modified However, this is only the case for field corn The farming area for these corn species takes up just 8% of the total corn farms across Vietnam

Fear of genetically modified products has also affected other exotic Vietnamese fruits such as purple guava, longan and black tomato Authorities have once again stressed that these products are the result of selective cross breeding and are perfectly safe for consumption.
