This time of year usually sees the highest flooding. However, the water level in Tân Châu station is still at roughly 2m and has not reached level 1 of the alert system. This is much lower than the same period last year - a year when salinity had reached a record high.
In the next 3 months, although the La Niña phenomenon is expected to occur, causing more local rain and an increase in the level of water upstream, the annual total rainfall in the whole basin will still be lower by 5-15%.
The water flow to the Mekong Delta in the first months of the dry season was much less than previous years' average. Experts predict that the peak of flooding season will arrive late, around mid-October.
