RoboSculpt is a skull drilling robot which is expected to be able to perform human surgeries within five years. RoboSculpt is a computer-controlled milling machine, with seven axes of motion and the ability to operate with sub-millimetre precision.
In layman's terms the robot is an arm holding an existing surgical drilling tool. Once the head is fixed in position the robot mills the desired cavity.
RoboSculpt promises to reduce surgery length, improve accuracy, and cut recovery time, resulting in fewer complications. Pre-clinical tests will begin later this year.
