Djokovic rolls on at Western and Southern Open, Murray eliminated

VTV.vn - Top seed Novak Djokovic made quick work of Tennys Sandgren at the Western and Southern Open, never dropping serve en route to a 6-2 6-4 win over the American, while big-serving Milos Raonic enjoyed a straight sets win over Andy Murray.

Next up for Djokovic is German Jan-Lennard Struff, who outlasted David Goffin 6-4 3-6 6-4 earlier on Tuesday. Murray had an impressive win over fifth seed Alexander Zverev on Monday but never found his rhythm against Raonic. The Canadian dominated on serve, firing 10 aces and winning almost 90% of his first-serve points, to advance to the quarter-finals 6-2 6-2.

* Naomi Osaka put on a solid serving performance to beat Dayana Yastremska 6-3 6-1 at the Southern and Western Open on Tuesday and advance to the quarter-finals, where she will face Anett Kontaveit. Former world number one Victoria Azarenka continued her dominance over Alize Cornet, improving to 7-0 lifetime against the Frenchwoman with a hard fought 6-4 7-5 win to advance to the quarter-finals.

* Renault have requested Formula One's governing body FIA to withdraw its appeal against the punishment imposed on Racing Point for copying Mercedes' brake ducts, the French team said on Tuesday.

* Wolfsburg ground out a 1-0 win over Barcelona on Tuesday to reach the Women's Champions League final for a fifth time. Booking their place in the final on Aug. 30, Wolfsburg will play against either holders Olympique Lyonnais or Paris St Germain, who meet on Wednesday.

* Former European Cup winners Red Star Belgrade reached the Champions League third qualifying round with a 1-0 win at FC Tirana and they were joined by PAOK Salonika who beat Besiktas Istanbul 3-1 at home on Tuesday.

* The 2020 World Triathlon Championships titles will be awarded at next month's World Triathlon Series event in Hamburg following the cancellation of the remaining two rounds of the season, the governing executive board said on Tuesday. The Montreal and Bermuda events, scheduled for October and November respectively, were called off due to the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving the Sept. 5 Hamburg round as the only other alternative on the calendar.

* Captain Lionel Messi has told Barcelona he wishes to leave the club immediately, a source confirmed on Tuesday, deepening the turmoil within the Catalan side less than two weeks after their humiliating 8-2 defeat by Bayern Munich.

* Antonio Conte will stay on as Inter Milan coach next season, the Serie A club said on Tuesday, ending speculation they may part company following last week's Europa League final defeat. * AS Roma have signed Spanish winger Pedro on a free transfer with the former Chelsea winger signing a three-year contract, the Serie A club announced in a statement on Tuesday. The 33-year-old ended his five-year spell at the west London club earlier this month, having scored 43 goals in 206 appearances and helping Chelsea win the Premier League title in the 2016-17 season and the FA Cup the following year.

* Former world soccer star Ronaldinho Gaucho left Paraguay on Tuesday, hours after a judge liberated him from five months of house arrest over an adulterated passport.

* Wales have handed Liverpool teenager Neco Williams a maiden senior call-up for September's Nations League matches, while Gareth Bale was also included in Ryan Giggs' squad on Tuesday.

* Belgium have called-up 18-year-old Jeremy Doku and Anderlecht strike partner Landry Dimata for the first time as coach Roberto Martinez named a 29-man squad for the start of the Nations League next month. It also includes seven players from Premier League clubs despite fears that COVID-19 quarantine regulations might stymie their selection for the games against Denmark and Iceland.

* Formula One fleshed out its 2020 calendar to 17 races on Tuesday, with the Chinese Grand Prix cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic but Turkey back on for the first time since 2011 and Bahrain handed two rounds. The sport said in a statement that Turkey's Istanbul Park circuit would host a race on Nov 15 before a Bahrain double in late November and early December and Abu Dhabi ending the season on Dec 13 at Yas Marina.

* French outfit Olympique de Marseille have detected three new suspected cases of COVID-19 among the club's staff, the Ligue 1 team announced on Tuesday. Marseille were set to play the 2020-21 season curtain-raiser against St Etienne last Friday but four confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus at the Provence club meant French professional football governing body postponed the game to next month.

* The PGA Tour's CJ Cup has been switched to Las Vegas from the Republic of Korea because of travel restrictions amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the Tour said in a statement on Tuesday. The US$9.75 million tournament, which has been staged at Nine Bridges on Jeju Island for the past three years, will now be held at the Shadow Creek course in Las Vegas from Oct 15-18.
