VTV.vn - Chinese Party General Secretary and President Xi Jinping began a state visit to Vietnam on Thursday. The visit is being made at the invitation of Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and President Truong Tan Sang.

The visit marks the Chinese State leader’s first visit to Vietnam in nine years. Through the visit, China hopes to affirm its desire to develop ties with Vietnam on the basis of mutual respect, benefit, and equality.

The visit comes in the context that the two countries’ relations have been developing well. Trade and investment relations between Vietnam and China have grown considerably, with two-way trade reaching US$58 billion in 2014.

On this occasion, Vietnam has re-stated its wish to develop practical relations with China to ensure peace, stability and development in the region and the world. Vietnam also aims to  affirm its foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, multilateralism and diversification.

The Chinese leader and his wife will be welcomed by their Vietnamese hosts at the Presidential Palace in Hanoi on Thursday afternoon.
