Export growth in all major markets helped Vietnamese catfish farmers enjoy the highest prices in the last 20 years. Each kilo of catfish earned farmers around half a dollar in profit.
However, according to experts, the high price depended upon some domestic processing enterprises which are boosting production to meet year end orders in US market. American consumers are willing to pay 5 USD for 1 kilo of Vietnamese catfish, which is nearly twice the price as before.
Experts, therefore, advised local farmers to strictly apply VietGAP or GlobalGAP standards to maintain quality and sustain their business over the long term.
