Tran Hau Lai has been implementing the large-scale field model on his 2-hectare plot since 2010. Lai and other participating farmers have been trained in new planting techniques and standards to apply on their fields. Their crops have been successful so far. After harvest, they have been distributed at higher than the market price.
Since the Summer-Autumn crop of 2011, the Can Tho authorities have implemented the large-scale field model under the Vietnamese Good Agricultural Practice (or VietGAP) standards. As of 2014, the model expanded over 39,000 hectares of plantation areas in the province. The number will increase by 17,600 hectares more in the Winter-Spring crop this year.
Currently, the provincial authorities have been organizing training courses to get more farmers and distribution companies involved. Moreover, they are also planning to build new advanced infrastructure, rural transportation and water resource facilities to support the supply chain in the time to come.
