They also discovered unusual soil layers, which served as a base of a construction and other grave sites with cremation graves and funerary jars.
The joint archaeological dig was conducted at Duong Xuan hill in Truong An District, Hue City between October 1st and 20th last year.
“Basing on the information we get from the site as well as our documents, we can guess that Duong Xuan historical sitedated back to the 17th and 19th centuries and lasted until the 20th century”, Bui Van Liem who is Deputy Director of Institute of Archaeology said.
Researchers and archaeologist have excavated in 5 sites, including Thuyen Lam and Van Phuoc pagodas at Duong Xuan Hill.
Archaeologists researching Duong Xuan Hill also proposed a general overview of the site. The top of the hill is where Van Phuoc Pagoda is located, surrounded by Tinh Do and Tu Dam pagodas, Thien Lam and Dieu Duc pagodas. The total area of Duong Xuan hill is about 10,000 square meter.
“We are currently preserving all artifacts collected and have started the process of documenting and digitizing so that we can archive the finds”, Cao Duy Hung, Director of Thua Thien Hue Museum of History said.
“We will continue research about the palaces, citadels, the graves in the sites as well as its artifacts. We will also expand our excavation to get a deeper understanding about the Duong Xuan Hill historical sites as well as the Tay Son Dynasty under the reign of King Quang Trung and Nguyen Hue”, Bui Van Liem said.
The artifacts and results collected during the excavation at the archaeological sites at Duong Xuan Hill help clarify the historical period during the Tay Son Dynasty.
