VTV.vn - The "Accompanying border women" programme has been providing practical support to women in frontier areas over the last three years of its implementation, heard a seminar held in Thanh Hoa City on December 26.

The event was held by the Vietnam Women's Union (VWU) and the Border Guard High Command to review the programme after its first phase (from 2018-2020).

The summary report at the conference stated that over the last three years, the programme has achieved positive results with nearly 100 units, networks, associations, and organisations providing support to 110 border communes under the programme (exceeding the set plan by 20 communes). Total resources mobilised from the programme stand at about VND150 billion. The amount mobilised through the humanitarian portal 1400 alone is nearly VND4 billion, supporting livelihood models in 39 communes under the programme.

As a result, all 110 communes have met the programme’s targets on supporting women's economic development. The programme has provided nearly six million heads of cattle and poultry, while VND 4.4 billion in loans has been offered to local women. Around 321 livelihood models have been deployed to help disadvantaged women while scholarships worth more than VND7 billion have been awarded to students in difficult circumstances.

Speaking at the conference, Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh highly appreciated the initiative of the VWU and the High Command of the Border Guard in implementing the programme, contributing to bringing about clear changes to the border areas of the country. The deputy PM agreed that the local authorities and concerned parties, especially border localities, should continue to implement the programme for the 2021-2025 period.

The Vietnamese Fatherland Front and its member organisations must act as a bridge between the local authorities and the people, while the local authorities should mobilise its members, local women and compatriots to strictly abide by the National Border Law, Vietnam Border Guard Law, Resolution No. 33 of the Politburo on national border protection strategies, and other border agreements and regulations, thereby fulfilling national defence and security tasks.

The deputy PM said that, in the coming period, the programme should not only be a coordination between the VWU and the Border Guard, but should also have the participation of many other sectors and support from other resources in society to promptly solve complex problems at the grassroots level, while maintaining stable political security, social order and safety, territorial sovereignty and national border security to create a stable environment for socio-economic development.

At the conference, the organisers launched a plan to implement the programme in the next period from 2021-2025. Accordingly, the two sides continue to support 110 border communes in the 2018-2020 period and provide additional support for 100 other disadvantaged border communes, with priority given to communes severely affected by climate change.

On the occasion, the VWU members and other organisations and individuals pledged to support the programme with a total of more than VND27 billion.
