Surfing – A Water Sport Worth Trying

During this year’s National Day holiday, visitors to Cam Ranh will have another experience to choose from as Alma Resort introduces surfing at Bai Dai Beach. The activity is suitable even for those who have never tried the sport before.

The new activity partly reflects changing preferences in how travellers plan and enjoy their holidays. In addition to relaxing, sightseeing and exploring local cuisine, more people are showing interest in trips that combine physical activity, personal well-being and time in nature.

The Growing Appeal of Sport Travel

The trend of combining travel with physical activity has been highlighted in several international reports. According to Hilton’s Global Trends Report, 70% of surveyed travellers want to stay active or take part in outdoor activities while on holiday. In Vietnam, a Booking.com survey also found that 25% of Vietnamese Millennial travellers and 26% of Vietnamese Gen Z travellers would consider participating in at least one sporting activity as part of a trip in 2026.

The appeal of surfing goes beyond the thrill of riding a wave. It is also a full-body workout that helps build endurance, improve balance and relieve stress by requiring surfers to stay fully focused as they move with the waves.

Bai Dai’s Natural Advantages

Beach conditions play an important role in the surfing experience, particularly for beginners. Compared with areas characterised by large waves, reefs or strong currents, the terrain at Bai Dai in Cam Ranh is relatively accessible for those learning the sport.

Its gently sloping shoreline, spacious beach and suitable wave conditions at certain times allow beginners to practise essential skills such as lying and standing on the board, maintaining balance and changing direction. Participants should nevertheless follow their instructors’ guidance and remain mindful of the weather and currents throughout the day.

To welcome travellers during the National Day holiday, respond to emerging travel trends and make the most of its beachfront location along Bai Dai’s white sands and clear waters, Alma Resort Cam Ranh is hosting a free surfing experience on 5 September 2026 for its guests at the resort’s private beach.

The activity will be led and supported by instructors from Cam Ranh Surfing Camp, whose team has received professional training in both surfing techniques and water-sports coaching. Lessons are tailored to each participant’s ability, from water-safety fundamentals, paddling and pop-up techniques for beginners to wave reading, generating momentum and refining turns for intermediate surfers.

The exclusive session is conducted by Cam Ranh Surfing Camp's certified trainers, featuring personalized coaching tailored to all skill levels

Before heading into the water, participants will receive instruction in basic surfing knowledge and techniques from local coaches. The programme includes an introduction to the surfboard, onshore practice, guidance on maintaining balance and essential water-safety principles. All necessary equipment will also be provided so that those with no previous experience can participate.
