Water puppetry and Cheo opera meet in new performance art

VTV.vn - The traditional sounds of Cheo folk opera meets the animated figures of Vietnamese water puppetry – all in a new performance show that is attracting audiences to the capital city’s Cheo theatre.

Artist of Merit Ngoc Anh has been a chèo opera singer for the past 30 years. Apart from going over her lyrics before the show today, she has also practiced techniques to perform with water puppets and a water stage.

The Hanoi Cheo Opera Theatre’s new act is entitled “Long Thanh dien xuong”, roughly translated as a performance in Thang Long – the capital city’s former name. It features cheo opera singers directly conducting the puppets in the water. The act strikes chords of familiarity with the audience, as traditional Cheo folk melodies as well as water puppetry acts play out.

Organisers share such crossing of different performance genres is part of the theatres project to conserve and boost interest in traditional arts.

The Hanoi Cheo Opera Theatre looks to continue creating new performance styles, all the while also introducing folk art genres in schools – developing a love for traditional arts among Vietnamese youths.
