Tet period offers audiences even more choice

VTV.vn - The lunar new year is traditionally a time when swathes of new films are released in the run-up to the holiday period.

Comedy has traditionally been the dominant genre for Vietnamese feature films released for the Tet holiday. However, this year seems an exception and film-makers have provided a wider variety of genres for festive movie-goers.

This Tet, audiences can also enjoy more serious features. The Life of Yen won 5 awards at last year’s Vietnamese Film Festival. It features a drama set in 1945, depicting the life of a young woman whose marriage was arranged by her parents at the age of 10.

The thriller Obsession is also expected to do well with Vietnamese movie lovers this Tet holiday.

"Producers have taken into account audience tastes. This year, they want to test the waters and provide more diversity and a variety of options for cinemagoers", Khuat Duy Tan, Head of Film Distribution Division, Department of Cinema, said.

Tet movies are highly anticipated, and film production companies are eager to see good box office returns. Last year, five films saw box office revenue of some 6.3 million USD, accounting for 20% of 2015’s total takings.
