Nearly 5000 hectares of special-use forests in Thuan Chau district have died and fallen after 2 straight days of intense ice and snow. This is the most severe loss of forests caused by weather ever witnessed.
3000 hectares of natural forest and 1000 hectares of new-grown forest have all been erased. Never before have local residents in Thuan Chau Commune seen such severe destruction from weather conditions.
Trees fell and broke utility poles, causing power outages in more than 40% of local households. The clearing of fallen trees also poses a challenge for forest rangers.
According to experts, forest rangers will need to closely monitor the area to prevent loggers from exploiting the situation.
