VTV.vn - Last week, the United States’ Senate voted to agree upon the draft Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) which transfers negotiation rights for free trade agreements to President Obama.

However, the draft doesn’t mention eliminating the Catfish Inspection Program in Agriculture Act of 2014. Senator John McCain and 2008 presidential candidates, along with 6 other senators, have proposed to eliminate the act.

Speaking at the Senate, Senator John McCain stressed that the establishment of a catfish inspection office under the US Ministry of Agriculture was costly, and the US Food and Drug Administration Agency had been doing the task for many years.

The Senator said that the country had spent 20 million USD to establish the office, but it hadn’t inspected any catfish. In his opinion, the inspection program could have negative impacts on the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

At last, in the draft TPA, the elimination of the inspection program was not mentioned. However, Senator John McCain said that he, with some other parliamentarians, would continue to call for the program to be eliminated.
