VTV.vn - Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam affirmed that stratification is necessary for the development of tertiary education.

The stratification of tertiary institutions is especially necessary in the context of (global) integration. This is among the main points discussed at the workshop on tertiary education held in Ho Chi Minh City yesterday (October 22nd).

According to Decree 73 on the stratification and ranking of higher-education institutions, which will soon come into effect, the system will be divided into three tiers: basic research, applied research, and professionally-oriented research. Many of the 219 universities across the country are expressing concerns, as the ranking will partly reflect their quality and may affect their prestige. Speaking at the workshop, Deputy Prime Minister Vũ Đức Đam affirmed that stratification is necessary for the development of tertiary education.

"I am happy that many of Vietnam’s universities were listed in the recent international education ranking. At first, there were mixed opinions about the stratification. However, since we were determined to carry out the plan, significant changes have been made.  We should choose a framework of international standards to apply in Vietnam" - Vu Duc Dam, Deputy Prime Minister.

The Deputy Prime Minister also urged the Ministry of Education and other institutions to plan their use of resources wisely in order to raise education quality and meet international standards. Dam shared his hope that Vietnam’s higher education institutions would have higher rankings in the 2015 – 2016 academic year.
