VTV.vn - Tuồng classic opera is regarded as one of Vietnam’s most sophisticated forms of drama, combining literature with folk songs and traditional dance. It has developed over many centuries.

Local people in Thạnh Thới An Commune, Sóc Trăng Province have gathered at the village temple to enjoy a Tuong performance as part of the Kỳ Yên Festival. The stage has velvet curtains and stage lighting. Backstage, the artists carefully prepare for their performance.

Unlike other art performances in Vietnam, Tuong focuses on epic topics, whether about national heroes or morality. The Phương Ánh troupe are one of the few tuồng performers in the south that still perform in the traditional way.

The artists have to travel across the south to perfom tuồng. Tuồng has been preserved intact through the centuries and considered as a treasure by the local people.
