VTV.vn- Mekong Delta provinces are facing 60-year record salinity levels. More than 950,000 hectares of the winter-spring rice crop in Mekong Delta provinces have been damaged since the beginning of this year’s dry season due to drought and salinity.

Long An, Tien Giang, Ben Tre, Tra Vinh, Kien Giang, Hau Giang, Soc Trang and Bac Lieu have been the hardest hit provinces in the region. Kien Giang province alone has lost 34 thousand hectares of its rice crop, while 70% of farming areas in Tien Giang are facing water shortages.

The local authorities are implementing measures to support farmers in dealing with salinisation. On Feb 17th, Minister of Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat will rganize a conference in Can Tho to discuss measures against this issue.
