The grand welcome ceremony for US President Barack Obama was held at the Presidential Palace. After that, President Barack Obama held talks with Vietnamese State President Tran Dai Quang and the two leaders witnessed several signing ceremonies.
The two sides discussed measures to enhance the Vietnam-US comprehensive partnership, boost the implementation of high-level agreements reached by the two countries, seek measures as well as orientations to boost the bilateral ties, and discuss regional and international issues of shared concern.
At the talk, the two sides committed to implement regulations of respecting each other’s independence, sovereignty, political institution and interests. They also discussed about the implementation of joint statement on US - Vietnam comprehensive partnership issued in July, 2013 and the Joint Vision Statement signed in July 2015.
The two sides also agreed to support the ratification of the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement, implementation of the Paris Agreement on climate change, and help residents in the Mekong Delta cope with the effects of climate change.
In response to questions on differences in opinions concerning human rights issues between the two countries, State President Tran Dai Quang reiterated that the Communist Party of Vietnam and the Vietnamese government are consistent in protecting human rights and achieved internationally recognised accomplishments. The two countries will continue to have talks to reduce the differences on the issues.
After the talks, the two leaders witnessed the signing of a number of economic cooperation deals including a contract to purchase 100 B737 MAX 200 air craft worth 11.3 billion USD between Vietjet Air and the Boeing Air Craft Group. Vietjet Air also signed another contract worth US$3.04 billion with Pratt &Whitney of United Technologies Corp. The memorandum of understanding between the Ministry of Industry and trade and General Electrics Group on measures to develop wind power in Vietnam was also signed.
