The two sides reached the free trade agreement after more than two years of negotiations. The EVFTA will lift 99% of all tariff barriers, with the remaining enjoying preferential rates.
The EVFTA will also open the door for European businesses to make further inroads into the Vietnamese market.
Also during his time in Brussels, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, European Council President Donald Tusk, and EC President Jean-Claude Juncker issued a joint press statement on the Vietnam-EU relationship.
This is the first time a European Council President and European Commission President have released a joint statement with a Vietnamese leader.
