He started his official visit to the US at the invitation of the US administration. The Party chief was welcomed at the airport by representatives of the US government, Vietnamese Ambassador Pham Quang Vinh and crowd of Vietnamese people in the US, as well as diplomats from ASEAN countries in the US.
This is the first time a General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam has made a visit to the US. The visit takes place at a time important to Vietnam-US relations, as the two countries are marking the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties.
