The people’s council in Khánh Hoà Province has recognised 6 of its administrative units as island communes in a recently adopted resolution. The communes are Trường Sa, Song Tử Tây and Sinh Tồn, Cam Bình, Vạn Thạnh and Vĩnh Nguyên.
The 3 communes in the Trường Sa District are located 230 miles offshore, while Cam Bình Commune is closer to the coast with a population of more than 5,000 people. Vạn Thạnh and Vĩnh Nguyên both have island and mainland areas. The designation will have to be considered by the Ministry of Home Affairs before it is submitted to the prime minister for approval as regulated.
