Wind power promoted to reduce carbon emissions

VTV.vn - Vietnam remains one of the most heavily-affected countries by climate change. And carbon emissions from the energy sector play a significant role in this problem.

Therefore, green energy is becoming vital in sustainable development to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Besides solar energy, wind power is another option for Vietnam to realise its goals in reducing carbon emissions.

This is Vietnam’s first wind power project built in Bac Lieu province. Although only phase 1 has entered production, it generates around 50 million kwh a year. This result proves the effectiveness of clean energy and it contributed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, while the power produced has exceeded initial plans.

However, large scale construction of wind energy projects hasn’t proved simple. The main reason for this is green energy needs large levels of initial investment while the pay for its electricity generated is still low; so the government still needs to cover losses.

According to Ministry of Industry and Trade, wind power has huge potential. After completing phase 3, the wind power project in Bac Lieu will supply nearly 500MW per year. Clean energy sources will help resolve a third of the predicted power shortfall in the southern region during 2017 to 2018. Due to this, green energy should become a key factor in Vietnam’s sustainable development and help reduce the country's carbon emissions in the years to come.
