The executive director of the WHO’s Health Emergencies Program, Michael Ryan, stated that the world is still in the first wave of Covid-19 pandemic.
The number of cases in Central and South America, Southeast Asia and Africa have increased. As diseases often develop into different waves, a new outbreak can recur this year in areas where the first wave has weakened.
WHO officials estimate that the infection rate will also increase again more quickly if the measures to prevent the first wave are lifted too soon.
