VTV.vn - Vietnam is expected to play an active role, contributing to raise awareness of the voice and participation of women in the creation and maintenance of peace and security both in the region and around the world.

That was discussed at an international webinar hosted by the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam (DAV) and German foundation Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung on October 30, aimed at raising the awareness of the importance of women in peace processes, towards promoting their role in peace and security, and contributing to Vietnam's participation in promoting the prominence of women, peace and security at multilateral fora, especially at the UNSC and ASEAN.

The event gathered delegates from the relevant domestic ministries, departments and agencies, as well as representatives from UN agencies, embassies of foreign countries in Vietnam, prestigious institutions, research institutes and universities and leading experts in the world and region on issues relating to women with peace and security.

Dr. Nguyen Hung Son, DAV’s Deputy Director, affirmed that the agenda on women, peace and security is a focus of Vietnam's multilateral diplomacy, especially at the UN and within ASEAN. Son emphasised that the event would help contribute to raising awareness of the importance of women in peace and security processes, while demonstrating Vietnam's strong shared commitment to promoting the role of women in the context of complicated new developments and challenges emerging in the region and around the world.

Hailing the role of women around the world, especially in Southeast Asia, Mohammad Naciri, UN Women Regional Director for Asia Pacific, emphasised that Vietnam is one of the typical examples in promoting the role and participation of women in UN peacekeeping operations.

Delegates at the event discussed opportunities and challenges for women, peace and security under the impact of emerging trends in the post-COVID-19 era, while offering recommendations on strengthening the role and power of women toward peace and security.

Participants agreed that women's participation is essential to building a lasting peace, especially in addressing the source of the problems.

In addition, they also proposed recommendations to enhance the role and position of women, especially boosting previous progress on gender equality.
