Vietnam thrived in the hi-tech categories of the 2016 ASEAN Skills Competition, clinching 3 gold medals in CNC machine maintenance and industrial mechanisation. The team also earned a gold medal in brick arrangement, a traditional category. However, there is still room for improvement.

Many believed the Vietnamese participants’ greatest disadvantage was their poor English skills. This cost them the opportunity to engage with international investors and experts.
This year, aircraft maintenance featured for the first time at the event. Singapore and Malaysia are currently presenting many opportunities in other hi-tech disciplines.
Dr. Pang Chau Leong, Chief Director, Singaporean Department of Skill Development said: We are intensifying heavy industrialisation, digital technology, and tourism, but lacking skilled workers.
Vietnamese contestants underwent intense training for 3 consecutive months before the contest. This somewhat justifies Vietnam's success in this year's skills competition. However, the biggest question now is whether or not Vietnam can maintain this performance level on a national scale.
