With 182 of 187 votes, Vietnam will officially act as a member of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) from 2016. Joining one of the 6 main UN bodies, Vietnam will jointly be in charge of economic, social, cultural, educational, healthcare, and humanity issues worldwide. Speaking at the vote, South Korean ambassador to the UN and incumbent ECOSOC President Oh Joon expressed great expectations for Vietnam’s contributions.
Over the next 3 years, Vietnam, as an ECOSOC member, will directly contribute to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Currently, Vietnam is also a member of the UN Human Rights Council and Peacekeeping Operations Force. In the past, the country was also a member of the Security Council. Being voted as an ECOSOC member is proof that the world recognizes Vietnam’s achievements.
