These nationals can enjoy 15 days in the country visa-free until the end of June 2017. This is one effort to attract more foreign tourists.
The decision not only delighted tourists, but also travel agencies, who have been expecting the change for months. Yet, they wish the visa-free period was increased to 30 days instead of 15.
"Most European tourists have really long stays here. It’s a long way, so they don’t come here regularly. They plan their trips long before they travel and want to explore as much as possible. If only the period was longer than 15 days!" - HA DUC MANH, General Director, AMICA Travel.
Yet the 15-day visa exemption for 5 European nationals has still been effective. In the first half of 2016, arrivals from the 5 markets increased by 20% compared to the same period last year, when there was no visa exemption. And Vietnam’s efforts to simplify visa procedures don’t stop here.
"The Government assigned the Ministry of Public Security, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and relevant agencies to set up e-visas and visas on arrival at border gates. This is an important measure, as it will be easier for all nationals to travel to Vietnam." - NGUYEN VAN TUAN, General Director, Vietnam Administration of Tourism.
Vietnam's neighbours are also trying to simplify visa procedures. In March this year, Indonesia offered visa exemptions for another 79 countries and territories. Visa exemptions, e-visas, and visa-on-arrival at border gates could help develop Vietnam’s tourism sector.
