Vietnam reaffirms importance of freedom of navigation and overflight in East Sea

VTV.vn - The 32nd Meeting of States Parties to the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) took place at the UN headquarters in New York from 13-17 June.

Participants looked into UN reports and underlined the request to adhere to UNCLOS, enhance regional and international cooperation in sea and ocean-related issues, and respond to challenges such as marine pollution, climate change, and rising sea levels.

Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN, reaffirmed that UNCLOS is a "constitution for the oceans."

With regard to the East Sea issue, he held that peace and development of the region and international community are associated with maintaining peace, security, and freedom of navigation and overflight in waters.

He stressed the importance of fully and comprehensively implementing the ASEAN-China Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) in 2022.
