VTV.vn - Vietnam is planning to hold the elections for the National Assembly and People’s Councils at all levels on May 23, 2021, according to the National Assembly Office.

NA Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan presided over a meeting on April 14 to discuss plans for the general elections.

The National Electoral Council is expected to be established in May 2020 and will be tasked with preparing for the elections.

The 15th National Assembly for the 2021-2026 term will have no more than 500 members, of which 200 are expected to be full-time members.

Vietnam is aiming for at least 35% of candidates for the national law-making body to be women with at least 18% to hail from ethnic minority communities.

In another development, the ninth plenary of the 14th National Assembly is expected to take place via video conference for a week before the deputies gather in Hanoi for a concentrated meeting.

The online meeting is aimed at discussing non-confidential matters and making decisions on several urgent issues such as ratifying the trade pact with the EU and measures to overcome the consequences of the Covid-19 epidemic.

After that, when it expected that the epidemic will be over, members of parliament will meet in Hanoi for 7-10 days to deliberate on confidential issues, cast votes on laws and resolutions and conclude the plenary meeting.
