The Vietnam National University recently announced the appointment of Prof. Dr. Furuta Motoo as the first rector of Vietnam-Japan University. He is the former managing director of the University of Tokyo, which is ranked within the top 100 internationally. Politburo member To Huy Rua was appointed as the honorary rector of the university. The university will open six masters courses in September in nano-technology, environmental engineering, infrastructure engineering, regional studies, public policy and business administration.
"This is a bridge to connect the Vietnam National University with a top university in Japan. We will make use of the advantages of both Vietnam and Japan. This is a milestone to accelerate Vietnam’s internationalisation process", said Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Kim Son - Deputy Director of Vietnam National University in Hanoi.
The Japanese professors will be responsible for 50 percent of specialist modules on each masters course. There is an anticipation that the university will meet a large part of Vietnam’s higher education needs.
"We decided to choose the Vietnam National University, the top university in Vietnam, as a partner to build the Vietnam - Japan University. And after the first masters course was implemented, I realised that our choice was right. We believe in the reputation and quality of VNU", said Dr. Furuta Motoo - Rector of Vietnam - Japan University.
The university was established as the seventh member college of the Vietnam National University, Hanoi in July 2014. Covering a total area of 36.6 hectares, the US$365 million university had funding of US$200 million in ODA from the Japanese government. The university is scheduled to fully enter operations in 2020. The courses will currently be run on the Vietnam National University campus.
